Qualified outside Nigeria (Teacher)

Introduction

The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) is the regulatory authority responsible for registering, licensing, and regulating the teaching profession in Nigeria. TRCN exists to ensure that only professionally qualified individuals are engaged in teaching at all levels of education in Nigeria.

If you are a foreign-trained teacher intending to teach in Nigeria, you are required by law to be registered with TRCN before taking up a teaching position. All prospective teachers must possess acceptable teaching qualifications and academic credentials for consideration for registration.

Eligibility

To apply for TRCN registration as a foreign-trained teacher, you must meet the following criteria:

Possess a recognised teaching qualification obtained from an accredited institution abroad.

Possess, at minimum of a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in education or in a relevant subject area combined with a teaching qualification.

Have all academic and professional documents translated into English if they are in another language.

Submit relevant documentation for verification.

Note: If you have not completed a recognised teaching qualification, do not apply until the awarding institution can provide official confirmation of completion.

Cost of Registration

The total cost will vary based on your registration category. However, a general breakdown is as follows:

Application Process

1. Pre-Evaluation:

4. Pay Applicable Fees:

Make payments via TRCN-approved channels and retain proof.

TRCN will review your application and may contact you for additional documents or verification.

6. Issuance of Certificate:

If successful, you will be issued a Provisional or Full Registration certificate and a teaching license.

Note: If your qualifications are not fully equivalent to Nigerian standards, you may be granted Provisional Registration, subject to fulfilling specific requirements (e.g. writing TRCN Professional Qualifying Examination).

Processing Time

Applications are assessed individually. Processing may take 6 - 12 weeks, depending on the volume of applications and completeness of your documentation. Submit early and have gathered all the required information to avoid delays.

Additional Notes

You do not need to reside in Nigeria or have secured a teaching job to apply.

However, registration with TRCN is mandatory before employment as a teacher in any Nigerian school.

If you intend to apply for headship or administrative roles, you must first demonstrate full teacher registration with TRCN.
